Fire Fire Fire

by skip2468 @ 2008-04-06 - 00:02:33

Our severe drought conditions brought the message home loud and clear yesterday. During the afternoon a fire broke out in a cool-store on the outskirts of our city - Hamilton NZ.

Though dozens of fire fighting appliances were quickly on the scene, little could be done and the fire was soon completely out of control. The simple reason was a lack of water. All through the afternoon and night, water tankers rushed in with water and more water, but no where near enough. The whole site was completely destroyed.

As we saw the fire from our home at 7pm - about 20km away.

The very sad outcome came to our notice this morning. One of the gallant fire-fighters died and many others are in the Waikato Hospital critically ill.

I am wondering how you found your way here.

Please come back soon and hopefully become one of our friends.

Yes, that's very bad news. I think it's difficult for us to imagine here the very detrimental effects of water shortages. I hope that the firefighters in hospital make a good recovery.

Thank you for your kind thoughts. The hot spots are still being worked on through this second night, allowing the heavy machines to move in in the morning and bring whatever remains down to earth.

That's terrible - we get mountain fires a lot in my part of Wales but sad to relate, many of these are arson. In the last year or two there has been a huge publicity campaign to try and show how dangerous this is, and how one day someone will be killed as a result. Fortunately this seems to have worked (either that or they have locked up the perpetrators) and they are now something of a rarity. Fingers cross that it remains that way!

I too have a personal hatred for cowardly arsonists.

This major fire was caused by leaking gas cylinders. The senior fire officer who was killed, smashed a padlock to get into the complex. As he opened the door the air rushed in, there was a tremendous explosion, and he was thrown violently into space.
