Our Winter Roads

This is typical over much of New Zealand at present. Frequent reminders about closed roads, black ice, and gale force winds are being issued by the hour.

Good fortune is still with us in Hamilton. Only a -3C frost this morning with a clear, calm, sunny day to follow. I won't brag with a photo this time.

...Hi Skipper & Mrs., am I to understand that it is winter in New Zealand at present. This is berry, berry interesting
just shows you how unfamilar I am with international weather patterns. Thanks for the insightful information. Ice is not a good friend of mine, every time it was icy, when I had a traveling job, I would wind up doing a 180 degree spin in my car, trying to stop at a red light. Lucky for me each time, there was not a car near me, so I escaped, injury and car damage free. take care.

Firstly,we are very pleased that you have made this visit and thank you for your very welcome comment.

Yes, we are well into winter with our mid- winter day being back on 21 June. Black ice is the nearest thing to disaster on the roads here.We are more than glad that you survived safe and sound all your winter escapades.

Please make this our very happy day by joining our friendly group. You will be the one and only bringing us weatherchecks from your part of the world. We look forward to your postings and to your further comments.

How do you cope with the icy roads, Skip? Do you put chains on the car tyres? Here there's very little. Main roads are sometimes gritted, but side roads (the ones that come down off the mountainside) are not, which means that we cannot stop at the bottom when we reach the main road. The council did put a grit bin on our road, but they put it at the top, meaning that folk at the bottom (or, like me, half way up) cannot actually get to the top of the road to get the grit. Ho-hum.....;)

Yes, quite similar here with chains and the spreading of sand on the icy areas.
